The route

Daytona Beach to Orlando International Airport

Daytona has its own airport but Orlando International has the flights, so nearly every group of any size travelling in or out of Volusia County ends up making this run. It is about an hour inland on I-4 and the 417, which is comfortable enough outside peak periods and considerably less so during them.

The complication with a departure run is that groups rarely fly out together. Twenty people will have flights spread across five hours, and the coach has to be timed to the earliest one, which means most of the group leaves earlier than they would individually choose. It is worth being clear about that when planning, and occasionally worth running two departures rather than one long wait at the terminal.

The inbound version is more straightforward. We track the arrivals, gather everyone at a single point, and run the hour east in one vehicle. For race weekends and event groups in particular, that beats trying to co-ordinate rental cars into a town where parking is already the main topic of conversation.

At a glance

Distance: About 60 miles

Typical time: Around an hour, longer at peak

Best for: Event groups and conference delegations flying out of MCO

When to leave

For departures we build the schedule around the earliest flight and airport check-in requirements. On event weekends we add real margin, because the roads around Daytona behave very differently that week.

Planning it properly

What decides this run

Timed to the earliest flight

Departure runs work backward from the first flight out, not the average. Sometimes two runs beat one long wait.

I-4 at peak

The inland run is comfortable off-peak and slow during it. We plan on the realistic figure.

Event weekend traffic

Speedweeks and Bike Week change the roads around Daytona entirely. Departure timing shifts accordingly.

Arrivals tracked

Inbound runs follow the actual landing time, not the schedule.

Route questions

About the Daytona to Orlando airport run

How long does it take from Daytona to Orlando airport?

About an hour in normal conditions, longer at peak or during a major event weekend. We plan on the realistic figure rather than the off-peak one.

Our group is on different departing flights. How does that work?

The coach gets timed to the earliest flight, which means some of the group waits at the terminal. For a wide spread of departures it is sometimes better to run two trips, and we will say so if it applies.

Do you run this during race weeks?

Yes, and the timing changes considerably. Speedweeks and Bike Week reshape traffic across Volusia County, so departure runs leave earlier than they would otherwise need to.

Can you meet arrivals at MCO?

Yes. We track the flights, gather the group at one point, and run everyone east in a single vehicle with the luggage stowed underneath.

Running this route?

Send the date, the headcount, and the time it actually has to happen. We will come back with one flat number.
